It matters what leaders do: Safety Culture is shaped by the worst behaviour the leader is willing to tolerate

What might be changed if one were to ask the question “What is the worst safety behaviour tolerated in our organization and what action needs to be taken to change it?” As you ponder that question consider the wise words of Dr. W Demming:

Safety Leadership Behaviour
“Only 15% of your company’s problems can be controlled by individual employees, while 85% can only be controlled by the management system. Most loss control problems are management system problems.”

A Safety Management System consists of:

  1. Setting clear standards in writing.
  2. Training workers on the standard in a way that connects their head to their heart.
  3. Holding people accountable to the standards with “tough love”.
